Deer

This was such an awesome experience! Back in May we had a deer come right up to the fence and just stand for about 20 minutes and stare at Dublin. We were a little concerned because they never come that close... and then to just hang out was very weird. But after checking out the scene, we realized that it was a Mama deer who had just given birth! We think she was coming up to check out Dublin to make sure he wasn't a threat. Over the course of the next few days we watched her come back and nurse her fawn and then leave into the woods again. We were worried she had abandoned the deer, but after reading up online, we discovered that the baby deer have no scent and can not be tracked by predators. So the mother only spends about 15-30 minutes with the deer at a time, just long enough for a snuggle and to nurse... this way the deer is safe. After a few days, both were gone. We figured we wouldn't see them again... but we've seen them several times! Every so often she will come back into the field and they both stop right behind our house and hang out for a few minutes, and then they are off again.
